About This Spot

Perched along Cliff Bridge Terrace with sweeping views of Scarborough’s sparkling coastline, St. Nicholas Café invites you into a quietly charming retreat where the rhythm of the sea blends with the soft hum of friendly conversation. This cozy café has a gentle, unhurried pace that encourages lingering over warm drinks and simple, satisfying plates that feel thoughtfully prepared — like a shared secret between friends who met here by chance.

The atmosphere strikes a delicate balance between comforting familiarity and a touch of local character, enriched by the café’s unique history as a converted funicular railway. Whether you settle in at a table indoors or choose to bask in the fresh seaside air outside, the mood is calm and welcoming, a perfect pause during a day of exploring Scarborough’s scenic promenades.

Part of the charm lies in the way familiar classics are done with heart — a warmly buttered scone served with jam and cream that pairs effortlessly with a creamy flat white, or pancakes that taste all the more comforting when enjoyed on Shrove Tuesday. For something more filling, the café’s sandwiches and jacket potatoes feel like plates of quiet satisfaction, ideal companions to a steamy pot of tea or a rich hot chocolate on a brisk day.

What truly lingers is the sense of human moments: the smiles of attentive staff who know the regular visitors by name, the comfortable hum of easy chatter, and the occasional burst of laughter floating out to mingle with the sea breeze. It’s a place where the views are as much a part of the experience as the food and drink — a spot where both locals and visitors naturally gather, drawn not just by the menu but by the peaceful pause it offers amid the coastal bustle.

Friendly staff, great views, best cream tea I’ve had in a long time! I’m in Scarborough for work and this little cafe is perfectly situated near my hotel. I believe it is a converted funicular railway which is pretty cool. Next time I’m up this way I’ll definitely be stopping in!

What a great little cafe. Visited today to meet a friend for coffee. We chose to sit outside even though we could sit inside if we wished. The cafe was clean & tidy & the staff were friendly. Our order was taken & the staff were more than happy to bring our coffee & my friends cake out to us. Very reasonably priced too. Will definitely pay a visit again.

Went here with my Grandson for lunch. He had a toasted cheese and ham sandwich, I had jacket potato with chilli and cheese. It was lovely and the portions were large I couldn’t finish all mine. Lovely clean cafe staff very friendly would definitely recommend.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel and had breakfast here a few mornings as it's so close to the hotel. Very nice food. Quick and friendly service. It's very clean. Amazing views especially if you sit in the back which is the old tram line. Would definitely recommend!
